Maria’s Story: Caring for Mr. Thompson
As a licensed practical nurse, Maria had always known that her job was about more than just providing medical care. It was about building relationships and providing comfort and support to her patients.
One day, Maria was assigned to care for an elderly man named Mr. Thompson who had been hospitalized with pneumonia. Mr. Thompson was weak and fragile, and he was having a hard time adjusting to being in the hospital.
Maria could see that Mr. Thompson was feeling lonely and isolated, and she knew that he needed more than just medical care. She made it her mission to brighten Mr. Thompson’s day and help him feel as comfortable as possible.
Every day, Maria spent extra time with Mr. Thompson, chatting with him about his life and interests. She brought him books and newspapers to read, and she helped him keep in touch with his family and friends.
As Mr. Thompson’s health improved, Maria could see the difference her extra care and attention was making. Mr. Thompson was no longer feeling as lonely and depressed, and he seemed to be regaining his strength and spirits.
Finally, after several weeks in the hospital, Mr. Thompson was well enough to be discharged. As he left, he thanked Maria for all that she had done for him. “You’re more than just a nurse,” he told her. “You’re a friend.”
Maria was touched by Mr. Thompson’s words, and she knew that he was right. Caring for her patients was about more than just providing medical care – it was about being there for them when they needed it most.
It is likely that Maria, as a licensed practical nurse, found the most joy in knowing that she was able to make a positive difference in the life of Mr. Thompson. Providing comfort and support to her patient and helping him feel less lonely and isolated during his hospital stay would likely have been very fulfilling for Maria.
Caring for patients can be a demanding and challenging job, but it can also be very rewarding. It is likely that Maria found great joy in being able to provide compassionate care and support to Mr. Thompson, and in seeing him regain his strength and spirits.
Overall, being able to make a positive impact on the lives of her patients is likely what gave Maria the most joy as a LPN.
