  • LPN Programs – Atlanta, GA – Classes & Schools

Atlanta, Georgia is known to be a sweet city in general, although whether that sweetness comes from its generally polite southern people or Georgia’s famous peaches is up for debate! If you come from Atlanta or Georgia in general and you’re  seeking information on becoming an LPN, this page contains information on Georgia’s licensing requirements for practical nurses, as well as information on courses for LPNs and a basic job description of LPNs.

LPN Schooling: Basic Information

Programs for licensed practical nurses in Georgia resemble registered nursing programs; they both have theoretical and practical aspects in order to provide a rounded education to students. LPN programs may require students to take both gen-ed classes (math, science, etc.) as well as nursing-specific classes. Nursing classes provide the theoretical framework of knowledge on which students can base their practical skills. Labs provide an opportunity for students to learn and practice nursing techniques under the supervision of an instructor. Students may practice these techniques on each other or on mannequins. And clinicals provide real-world nursing experience to LPN students; clinicals tend to occur once (or more frequently) every week in a medical setting of some sort until they are finished.

General LPN Job Tasks

Atlanta LPNs perform a broad range of different duties depending upon where they happen to be employed. For example, the duties that an LPN working in a hospital would perform would typically be different from the duties that an LPN working in a doctor’s office would perform, although there would obviously be some overlap as well. LPNs typically perform a number of bedside care tasks, and also help relay information to other people on the medical staff about the health status of patients.

Bedside care involves physical work with the patient, which may include dressing and taking care of the patient’s wounds. Some tasks may require an LPN to be specially certified in order to do them, however, some may not. LPNs may record patient vital signs and take common medical measurements (blood pressure, etc.).

Basic LPN Licensing Information in Georgia

Practicing as an LPN in Atlanta or the state of Georgia in general requires a practical nurse license; this can be obtained by going through a licensing process that Georgia has set in place. Because not all scenarios may be covered, and because fee amounts and laws change, visit the Georgia Board of Nursing website.

Requirements that LPN applicants in Georgia must meet include graduation from a Georgia board-approved school. If the applicant intends to go to an out-of-state school, the school must meet Georgia’s requirements. Applicants who are graduates of in-state schools do not need to worry about sending an official transcript from their school because the Georgia schools send transcripts automatically. However, applicants from out-of-state schools will need to request official transcripts from the school for the Georgia Board of Nursing. Applicants must fill out an online application (a paper one is available for out-of-state applicants) and pay any applicable fees. Prospective LPNs also need to register with COGENT Systems for fingerprinting for a criminal background check. Also, applicants must register the NCLEX test (the main test that most states require in order to obtain a Practical Nursing license) and receive a passing score.

The exam that practical nurse applicants must take (the NCLEX) is a computerized, comprehensive nursing exam. Each applicant’s set of exam questions is different from other applicants’ the total number of questions may vary. For more information on Georgia’s LPN licensing requirements or for more information on unique licensing scenarios, visit the Georgia Board of Nursing’s webpage.
